Learn how to correctly mark out the plane of a new wall using a laser. This practical guide for contractors helps eliminate installation errors and prepare a perfectly even surface for plasterboard.


Setting the perfect wall plane is the foundation of the entire Michno System installation. This stage determines the later evenness of the cladding, the correct performance of the structure and the final visual result. In the next part of our “Step-by-step installation” series, we show how to carry out this process properly — on a real example, in an old building where walls can still surprise you.

Why is this stage so important?

In old buildings, uneven surfaces are part of everyday work:

  • high spots and low spots,

  • vertical deviations,

  • local deformations,

  • breaks and distortions at corners.

For Michno System to “work” properly and for the plasterboard to sit evenly, we must create our own reference plane, completely independent of the wall’s irregularities. The most accurate way to do this is with a line laser.


STEP 1. Position the laser as close to the wall as possible

We start by positioning the laser as close to the wall as possible. This lets us detect the first differences in distance and see how much the wall “runs out”.

In practice, it looks like this:

  • set the laser parallel to the wall,

  • check whether the beam passes right next to the surface at two extreme points — at the top and at the bottom,

  • assess where the laser “moves away” from the wall and where it almost touches it.

The recording below shows the following example: on one side there is slight clearance, on the other the laser barely passes, and in one corner it touches the surface at zero. This is a clear sign that the wall is not plumb and does not keep a flat plane.

Positioning the laser as close to the wall as possible

STEP 2. Gradually move the laser away from the wall

The next step is to move the laser far enough so that the beam:

  • touches the surface, or deviates from it only slightly, at every point,

  • does not disappear behind high spots,

  • does not “fall” into low spots.

Move it gradually — by 1–2 cm at a time — while observing the line:

  • if the beam overlaps the surface too much on one side, move the laser away,

  • if too much clearance appears on the other side, move it back closer,

  • check both the bottom and the top of the wall.

This is the moment when the real deviations become visible — sometimes one centimetre, sometimes more. Only when the line lightly “brushes” the surface along its entire length can we treat it as our starting point.

STEP 3. Find the correct wall plane

After a few adjustments, the final position is found:

  • the beam touches the wall in one place,

  • in another place there is minimal clearance,

  • the whole line remains equally visible along its full length.

This means one thing: the laser has shown us the real future wall plane - This line defines the final, even cladding surface.

Setting the plane may seem like a simple stage, but it determines: the evenness of the entire cladding, correct system performance, no stress or cracking, and fast installation of the next elements.

A laser is a tool that lets you set the future wall plane precisely and repeatedly, even on very crooked walls.
This allows us to eliminate 90% of installation errors right at the start.
